WORDz for the WEEK

170. It's amazing how sometimes you can be smiling and laughing and then something happens and you can't seem to any more.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Over acidity (low pH) in the body can, over time, weaken all body systems. An internal environment that has a lower pH than is optimal may make it easier to succumb to illness and disease. Many Nutritionists, Herbalists, Naturopaths and the like have long believed that chronic conditions such as Fibromyalgia, Lupus, Arthritis, certain cancers and many other health problems are more likely to arise in a person whose body is not in the correct pH balanced state. If excess acid needs to be almost constantly neutralized then our alkaline reserves can become depleted and then the body can remain in a chronic, over-acidic state with all the challenges that can put your organs and your body.

Low Aerobic Energy Production and Pain in Fibromyalgia – Is Your Microcirculation To Blame?

Intense aerobic exercise
is not recommended
for fibromyalgia
Exercise is highly recommended as an adjunct therapy in Fibromyalgia. When we’re talking about exercise and FM, however, we’re not talking about pounding the pavement.  A 2010 review of exercise studies that ‘slight to moderate’ intensity aerobic exercise sessions done two to three times a week worked best and that appropriate levels of exercise result in improved fitness but only modestly improved pain. Another review warning not to overdo stated that “the latest findings concerning the neurophysiology of nociception indicate the fundamental importance of assigning workloads that do not exacerbate post-exercise pain.”

Is Carrageenan A Safe Food Additive for Gluten Free Foods?

Recently there has been an increase of this additive in the gluten free food supply.  It is used as a thickener in soups, salad dressings, sauces, almond milk, and much more.
New research shows that this food additive can cause gut inflammation.  I have personally seen a number of patients who react badly to it.
I strongly recommend that you read your labels and make sure this ingredient doesn't make it to your dinner table.

http://www.glutenfreesociety.org/gluten-free-society-blog/is-carrageenan-a-safe-food-additive-for-gluten-free-foods

<><><><><><><>

Yesterday I posted a new article on the dangers of the food additive - Carrageenan.  The question that came up most in response to this was -
What other gums can be used as  thickeners?
Xantham gum, acacia gum, guar gum, and locust bean gum are some of the most common food thickeners.  I would advise against eating them.  All of them are difficult to digest, and if you are trying to recover a gluten damaged gut, these additives won't help you in this process.
You might try arrowroot and tapioca as alternative thickeners. I will be posting more on gums soon.

May Newsletter

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Originally from"Pass The Butter ... Please.”

This is interesting . . . .

Margarine was originally manufactured to fatten turkeys. When it killed the turkeys, the people who had put all the money into the research wanted a payback so they put their heads together to figure out what to do with this product to get their money back.
It was a white substance with no food appeal so they added the yellow colouring and sold it to people to use in place of butter. How do you like it? They have come out with some clever new lavourings....
DO YOU KNOW.. The difference between margarine and butter?
Read on to the end...gets very interesting!

THE PETITION TEXT:
Dear David Cameron, Nick Clegg and Ed Miliband
It’s time for a real recall bill.
We call on you to support a recall bill that puts the power in voters hands, so that if, in between general elections, enough voters were dissatisfied enough with their MP to petition for a by-election, they could.

As most readers will know, last year I had an enucleation of my left eye due to ocular melanoma.  I had not considered there was any connection between this and FM.  I belong to a FaceBook group for ocular melanoma patients and have just discovered TWO other members with both conditions.  Are there any FM sufferers who also have/had ocular melanoma?  Do let me know.

Incidentally, I now have my driving licence reinstated and am driving again.  Hurrah!!  But not yet unaccompanied!
Keep good

Medical marijuana is hard to come by, but as it becomes more common, we're getting new information about how effective it may be for us - including how it compares to approved fibromyalgia drugs. More on that, below.
Also this week, a look at fibromyalgia history shows it's clearly not a "new" or "fad" illness, plus a look at some changes you'll soon be seeing.

Medical Madness: How the Feds Approved Drugs for Fibromyalgia That Don’t Work Well While Barring Access to One That Might

Three drugs ( Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Savella) have been approved for Fibromyalgia. On the face of it  that’s great.
That means three drugs have successfully undergone several large and rigorous clinical trials under the eye of the FDA. The drugs helped legitimize FM and their tremendous financial success revealed a population of 5 million  or so FM  patients that were eager for relief.  That was a huge step forward. Some even divide Fibromyalgia into Fibromyalgia pre-Lyrica (pre-2007) and FM post-Lyrica era’s. They made that much  of a difference. It doesn’t mean, however, that these drugs will  work for you or even that they’ll work all that well  if they do. The  Food and Drug Administration (FDA)  does not require a drug to be a  cure to be approved; it simply requires  that a  drug provide a significant  clinical benefit to a portion of the patient population and there’s the rub.

A Closer Look at Natural Killer Cells In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Three Natural Ways to Boost Them

Natural Killer (NK) cells are specialized immune cells of the innate, non-specific immune system. Comprising about 10% of white blood cells they are densest in the liver, spleen, blood, lung, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. In response to an immune threat, NK cells release a class of chemical messengers (cytokines, IFN-y) that recruit T lymphocytes and other immune cells to attack. They also function to communicate to other immune cells to curtail their offenses, thus inhibiting an overactive response.

. . . . While stress related to work and family remains the number one cause of insomnia, eating the wrong foods -- such as those rich in sugar, caffeine, gluten or polyunsaturated fat -- can also contribute to insomnia. Therefore, improving one's diet is an important first step toward ending insomnia, especially if one favors foods that are known to improve sleep.

The Burden of Gluten

Norah Wickerson
10 Facts about Gluten

  • We now eat a great deal more gluten than we did 50 years ago.
  • Gluten is used as a filler, a binder, taste enhancer and thickener and is now used in unexpected foods eg coleslaw, chocolate and even some ice creams!
  • We can be intolerant ie allergic to gluten, as in Coeliac Disease (CD) or sensitive to gluten which is much harder to get diagnosed but can still be a very serious problem with life affecting symptoms.

What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fast Facts: An Easy-to-Read Series of Publications for the Public
Fibromyalgia is a disorder that causes muscle pain and fatigue (feeling tired). People with fibromyalgia have “tender points” on the body. Tender points are specific places on the neck, shoulders, back, hips, arms, and legs. These points hurt when pressure is put on them.

Missing Diagnosis: From Fibromyalgia to Hyperparathyroidism – Could You Have An Entirely Treatable Condition?

Symptom-based definitions involving pain and fatigue have a problem: they can fit a lot of people, and that means subsets abound. If you have them and don’t get a thorough workup at your doctor’s office something could be missed. According to a recent conference report from Medscape News that something in Fibromyalgia includes a very treatable condition called
hyperparathyroidism. As with orthostatic intolerance, thyroid and adrenal problems, small fiber neuropathy, and other disorders, the symptom overlap between FM and hyperparathyroidism is huge. People with either disorder commonly experience fatigue, musculoskeletal pain, headache, cognitive dysfunction, and mood disturbance. Both disorders are more common in women, and both increase with age.

Fibromyalgia Causes

There are several theories about the causes of fibromyalgia, from hormonal disturbances to stress to genetics. While there is no clear consensus about what causes fibromyalgia, most researchers believe fibromyalgia results not from a single event but from a combination of many physical and emotional stressors.

Whether you have a full-blown anxiety disorder or are just freaking out, you may not want to try medication—at least not yet.
There are many safe nondrug remedies for anxiety, from mind-body techniques to supplements to calming teas. Some start working right away, while others may help lessen anxiety over time.

The Adrenal Summit

I have professionally reviewed over 4,300 adrenal tests in my career and have seen only 5 return healthy and normal at the onset of a new client. Yes, this was not a typo, ONLY 5!
In fairness, I work with health challenged individuals so these are 4,300 plus results of people that are already dealing with some type of physically manifested disease state. This could be individuals with weight issues, fatigue, mental/emotional imbalance or any diagnosed disease state. Based on the numbers above, if you have a current health challenge, there is approximately a 1/10th of one percent chance that you have healthy adrenal function.
I don’t know about you but to me, those are not very good odds.
You may ask, “Why is your adrenal gland function so vitally important?” Basically because your adrenal glands will play a direct role in all of the areas listed below. . . .

JSA sanctions

Sanctions against claimants have reached record levels and it is very clear that they are being imposed for the tiniest deviation from agreements or even for no good reason whatsoever. They are now affecting not just JSA claimants but also ESA claimants – particularly those forced onto the work programme.
Below we’ve given our top tips for avoiding sanctions and some of the most outrageous examples of unfair sanctions that we have come across.
We also explain how to sue the DWP or work programme provider if they make an activity mandatory and it is unreasonable because of your health condition or disability
But we’d very much like to hear from you about your experience of sanctions, or threats of sanctions, and also any advice you can give fellow claimants on how to avoid or challenge unfair sanctions.

8 years of Friendships & Support (+ contest)

Happy Birthday to all of us!
At first I couldn’t believe it.
8 years?? Really? but thinking a bit more & realizing all that happened it’s starting to make sense (for starters I was single back then and now I have 3 daughters ;-)
When Alon and I started MDJunction we had very little knowledge of what it will become. We believed in ‘Patient Empowerment’ and in ‘People Helping People’ but those were slogans, not a grocery list.
A few people found the site and started talking (we didn’t have groups back then only one forum). A post every 3-4 days made us thrilled and excited. To think we have thousands of posts a day now, almost 2 million altogether. We actually have more than 20 members who have 10,000+ posts!!
More people found the site & they asked for disease specific groups instead of one forum. We started 14 support groups and realized this is what we want to do. MDJ has more than 800 groups now and almost all of them started with a member sending us a PM saying we should start a group for…
Then - more friends joined ;-) and their friends too. Friendships were formed in the site and some taken to real life. 3.5 million Hugs sent over the years, and tens of millions of Private Messages between members!
Being a family-like social network means that all we are and all we’ve done is credited to our members. You guys make it happen every day in every way. People Helping People. Now we know what it is… and we’re proud to be a place where thousands meet every day to discuss their feelings, questions and hopes with likeminded friends.
We want to say a BIG Thank You to all our members! We love you ;-)

HOSPITAL CLOSURE CLAUSE: WE DID IT! - MAY 7TH, 2014 BY RACHEL OLIVER

Some very, very good news. We did it! The government has accepted our amendment to the hospital closure clause in the House of Lords.
Without our amendment the hospital closure clause would have given the government new powers to close any hospital in England, even if local doctors were against it.
The clause was voted for by MPs back in March after the government made some concessions. Their changes didn’t go far enough, but it seemed like the government wouldn’t budge any further.
The clause was due to be passed today. So the government’s decision to accept – al

most word for word – the changes proposed by lawyers funded by 38 Degrees members came right down to the wire – and it was a big surprise.
Our people powered pressure worked and our hospitals are now safer. Thank you for everything you’ve done to make this happen. Hurrah!

Vicky's Newsletter

I thought as this building work at home is glorious that I’d run away on my annual ‘girls’ trip for a week.  So I’ve headed for the Sun and made use of the Bank Holiday.
We’re getting pretty busy!  The evening classes are getting busy with waiting lists and so there will be a new 45 minute class starting on 2nd June.  I think this class would be good for those with a busy life who would like to get their exercise done on their way home from work.  If you want to transfer from your regular evening class please let me know.  I already have two people booked for the class so you won’t be alone!  Please spread the word.

Despite being away, being ill and consequently being short of time, I have managed a reasonable eNews for you this week.
I wish you well - and happy reading.

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.

If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
