What has been happening with the weather?  One day it is beautifully bright, warm and sunny, and we feel that spring has truly sprung but then it's dull, cold and wet and we wonder if we ever left winter behind!

But then there are inevitable 'April Showers', so perhaps it's not so odd after all!  Is there a fibro analogy there?  One day we might be feeling 'good' then a flare hits and we are instantly 'bad'.  Variety is the spice of life, or so we are led to believe!

WORDz for the WEEK

165.  As you travel through life, leave your mark, not a stain.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

 Cholesterol

Norah Wickerson
This is not the 'baddie' we have being led to believe. It is essential for many very important functions -
  • Helps to make hormones like oestrogen and progesterone.
  • Helps to make stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisol.
  • Helps repair little tears and damage in cells and blood vessels.
  •  Forms part of the make up of the myelin sheath to protect nerves.
Most importantly it helps the body metabolize Vitamin D - vital to have optimal level of this in any chronic pain condition and problems with immune system and general health. I could argue that vitamin D is the most important vitamin, even though it is actually a hormone, as it does so much more than we previously were aware of.

The Fatigue and Pain Producers: Could Glial Cells Be ‘It’ in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia?

Suddenly glial cells are turning up in spades in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.  The Japanese neuroinflammation study found widespread glial cell activation in the brains of people  with ME/CFS. Younger’s leptin finding suggests the glial cells may be going bonkers in ME/CFS, does his successful low dose naltrexone study in Fibromyalgia. VanElzakker’s Vagus Nerve Infection Hypothesis proposes chronic glial cell activation near the vagus nerve is causing ME/CFS.

Natural ways to sweeten foods without refined sugar

People who prefer to sweeten their foods do not have to rely solely on refined sugar or artificial sweeteners to accomplish the task. There are several sources that produce the sweet taste many people crave without adding the calories most people are constantly trying to avoid. The important thing when trying to find a natural sweetener is to look for those that offer other benefits in addition to their sweet flavor.

Do People That Eat Margarine Really Know How It's Manufactured?

Polyunsaturated margarine became a major part of the Western diet and had overtaken butter in popularity in the mid-20th century. Despite their best efforts, the margarine lobby has failed to convince most people that their synthetic concoctions are healthy. So what is not obvious to most of the people who consume it? The manufacturing process of course, which is very similar to the way plastic is produced.

The Revolutionary "Good Fat" That Promotes Heart, Brain, Bone and Joint Health

Although we tend to think of fat as a "bad" thing, there are "good" fats that our body needs in order to function properly - in fact, we can't live without them.
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are in that good fat group. Our body requires them in order to perform a number of different biological processes. EFAs must be ingested because the body does not manufacture them itself.

Innovative Nutrient Helps Repair Damaged Mitochondria & Reduce Fatigue up to 45%

Clinical trials have shown that NT Factor® can actually support the repair of damaged cell
membranes - in effect reducing the cells' biological age and restoring mitochondrial ability to generate energy.
This is true whether the reduced energy/fatigue is from an illness like ME/CFS or fibromyalgia, a side effect of chemotherapy, or simply a result of aging. Studies done with severely fatigued patients in each of these populations demonstrated that NT Factor can support reduction of fatigue levels by as much as 45 percent.(1-3)

Women and Fibromyalgia (sorry gentlemen!)

Many of the books on fibomyalgia tend to focus primarily on how to live with the condition. While there is value in this approach I believe we need more answers about why fibromyalgia is more common in women.
This is a book that will share twenty women’s stories of courage in living with this unbelievably common, debilitating and chronic condition. It is storytelling that allows voices to be heard that have often been silenced. During the process of interviewing the women I lived through an ‘aha’ moment that led me to a possible, and highly likely explanation about why fibromyalgia occurs primarily in women.

Fibromyalgia pain: Resetting the hypothalamus with diet, sleep, excercise

For fibromyalgia sufferers, increasing movement and re-setting the hypothalamus are critical first steps in reducing pain and restoring wellness.
Victims of fibromyalgia (FM) suffer from fluctuation in body temperatures, making them hot one minute and cold the next. The feeling can range from feverish to shivering.

Fibromyalgia understood: Sensitive receptors generate excessive pain

Studies conducted at Georgetown University and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by Daniel Clauw M.D. and Richard Gracely M.D. and supported by the National Fibromyalgia Research Association, the U.S. Army and NIH have revealed via advanced brain imaging that fibromyalgia is rooted in physical source and not generated by psychological issues.
Advanced technology called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) clearly shows brain blood flow and neurological changes during painful episodes that affect victims of the disorder.

Fibromyalgia solved: Not in the mind, but a very real physical ailment

The National Biotechnology Information Center (NBIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently released the findings of research funded by grants from Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals and Forest Laboratories that claim to have discovered a causative pathology (the science of cause and effect)  for fibromyalgia.
The cause of the disease escaped researchers for years. In fact, the condition was considered by many in the field of medicine as psychosomatic (in the mind) because of the variety of symptoms that could not be clinically pinned down and patient reporting was the primary criteria.

Thalasso-WHAT?

This is something that I am happy to see! There are a really good amount of studies going around concerning Fibromyalgia and treatments that help ease the pain. Compared to years past, it’s a marked improvement, to say the least! I even keep a specific Google Alert set up to e-mail me when any news article with the word “Fibromyalgia” pops up, so I can keep on top of the latest news, research and studies going on with it. This morning, when I checked my e-mail, an article about Thalassotherapy for Fibromyalgia came up!

Vicky's Newsletter

With the sun making a welcome appearance, I don’t seem to be the only one that has dusted off their bike this week.  I nearly came a cropper when my shoe, which clips onto the pedal, wouldn’t release but survived just.  The SPD clips are adjusted now to very lose! This picture was taken on the Worth Way which was a great place to get going again. (See below)

We have had a good break over Easter and caught up with family and friends.  I hope you found some time to do the same and enjoyed some ‘downtime’.

I am in the process of having some new flyers printed as I plan to put more classes on in early June.  The hall has become available on a Tuesday evening now and I plan to start a 7.30pm class that evening.  Please let me know if you would be interested in attending that class or know of anyone that might like a FREE trial in that class.
I hope you had a lovely break over Easter and didn’t eat too many of those eggs!

Fibromyalgia International Awareness Day 12th May 2014

As part of our awareness campaign, FMA UK have arranged a presentation of their survey of people with fibromyalgia on the 12th May in The House of Commons committee room 19 from 18.00.

If you would like to attend please email pam.stewart@fmauk.org with your name(s) and the group you are representing by 7th May.
We would appreciate you writing to your MP, as they are bound to take notice of communications from their constituents.  You should always include your name and postal address.
We suggest you either ask to meet them at this event if you can attend or ask them to attend on your behalf if you are not attending.
The presentation will be sent out to all groups prior to the event so that you can use this to inform your local press.  They are likely to want a case study/personal story about someone’s experience of their diagnosis and treatment of fibromyalgia, so have this organised beforehand.
Thank you for your support in raising awareness among the policy makers.  This is vital if we are to get an improvement in treatment across the UK.
Pam Stewart
Chair of trustees.
Thank you for reading this. If anyone has any questions then please email the office on head.office@fmauk.org

Please do take action as Pam has requested.  Find your MP here

http://www.parliament.uk/mps-lords-and-offices/mps/

Put in your post code, click on Go, then you will get contact details of your MP - post, phone and email.  So please help raise awareness of FM in parliament.  There's no chance of MPs doing anything to help us if they don't know about us.  We have the opportunity to tell them.  It's up to us.  I've written to my MP.  Will you write to yours?

Then, we've got research showing the same nervous system dysfunction in fibromyalgia, ME/CFS, irritable bowel syndrome, and the painful bladder condition interstitial cystitis; plus a look at the weird things our nerves can do to us.

The Chronic Fatigue Syndrome & Fibromyalgia Diet
Eating for Symptom Management

A healthy diet plan is important for managing fibromyalgia (FMS) or chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS or ME/CFS). While it's not a "cure" and there is no magic diet that works wonders for everyone with these conditions, eating right can help you feel better, have more energy and boost your immune system.

As important as eating right is not eating wrong -- certain foods and drinks could be worsening your symptoms. It will take some trial and error to find what works best for you, but the information here is a good place to start.

Does ground flaxseed have more health benefits than whole flaxseed?

Most nutrition experts recommend ground over whole flaxseed because the ground form is easier for your body to digest. Whole flaxseed may pass through your intestine undigested, which means you won't get all the benefits.

My "Bad Day Box" - coping with flare ups

We all know those dreaded flare up days! I have a little trick I put together which helps a bit - my "bad day box". I got a really pretty box at a discount shop, and in there I have a few little treats to nurture myself when I'm having a real bad flare and have to stay in bed. Mine contains a couple of favourite comforting books, some lovely hand cream, bath salts (and epsom salts), some luxurious chocolate, a magazine or two (I've already read them, but thanks to fibro fog they'll be fresh to me the 2nd time around), a pretty little colouring book and pencils, a bottle of lavender and rose essential oil, a couple of letters and photographs which are special to me, a few cards and envelopes to write a wee note to a friend, and a cat toy to entice my kitties onto the bed to cuddle me. dipping into my bad day box always reminds me that I can try to love and care for myself even when I don't feel much worth it, and I recommend to try it out for yourself. What do you do to nurture yourself through the bad days? Bless!

Last Sunday was a bad day for me -

totally fatigued and with hands that itched unbearably. That's not happened to me before.  Fortunately it only lasted for a day.  Is that peripheral neuropathy?  Part of fibromyalgia?  Saturday had been a super day when I cooked a family meal for seven people, and survived. Maybe Sunday was payback!

Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
