Special Edition for International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day 12th May 2014

Officially it's ME/CFS/FM Awareness Day, but each condition claims it for itself!  The more awareness that can be raised, the better for all three.

In this issue you will find various versions of the origin and purpose of having this special day but all agree that it was Florence Nightingale's birthday. There are lots of other sites, blogs and forums trying to raise awareness.
Please pass on this URL

Fibromyalgia Awareness Day 2014

What’s fibromyalgia awareness all about? And, do we really need more of it?
Asking this readership to be aware of fibromyalgia is like asking a flame to be aware of its heat.
Fibromyalgia is with us every waking moment (and in many pseudo-sleeping moments as well). We think about fibromyalgia as we get up in the morning, as we prepare meals, and as we function throughout the day. It’s not typically far from our awareness.
Fibro newbies may require more information, but what about the rest of society?

Fibromyalgia and Florence Nightingale

“There is no part of my life, upon which I can look back without pain”, Florence Nightingale
To-day, May 12th is International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. It is also the birth date of Florence Nightingale, born May 12, 1820.
In 1986 I decided that it was time to develop a Canadian Association for the History of Nursing and began the work with a colleague from Ontario, Dr. Margaret Allemang, of establishing such an Association. For all the subsequent years we have had either a national or international conference and every year without fail, someone mentions Florence Nightingale. It is either in a research paper, or some kind of visual display, or perhaps just a passing comment, for who better to honour than the founder of modern day nursing?

“Apprehension, uncertainty, waiting, expectation, fear of surprise, do a patient more harm than any exertion” Florence Nightingale

This is a very special issue for our newsletter because it is Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. The 12th of May, being Florence Nightingale birthday, and because she may have suffered from fibromyalgia, it is the Fibromyalgia Day.
But it goes further than that. She was vociferous and un-fatigable in pursuing the right of patients. She deranged the conservatism of the society of her time and was considered by many as a pest. They tried everything to keep her quiet but even honors did not shut her down (nowadays, many doctors and nurses are happy to stay quiet in exchange of honors or money).
(URL misplaced - apologies!)

ME/CFS & Fibromyalgia International Awareness Day – How It All Began

May 12th was designated as ME/CFS & Fibromyalgia International Awareness day back in 1993, 16 years ago (now 21 years ago).  The particular date of May 12th was chosen to honor the birthdate of Florence Nightingale, the English army nurse who inspired the founding of the International Red Cross. Florence Nightingale became chronically ill in her mid-thirties with an illness like ME/CFS (and who knows – maybe it was!) and she spent the remainder of her life (over 50 years) practically bedridden.
Even though Florence was suffering from a debilitating illness, she still managed to become the founder of the world’s first School of Nursing. Since then much has happened in the way of progress to help the millions of ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia sufferers, but there is still much more that needs to be done.

Florence Nightingale and ME Awareness Day

Although it cannot be truly confirmed, it is very interesting to note that it is believed Florence Nightingale had CFS/ME or fibromyalgia.
I’ve only recently found this out while researching information for this blog. The 12thMay is ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia awareness day – and it was actually chosen because it was Nightingale’s birthday. After returning back from the Crimean War, the famous nurse became bed-ridden and found it too tiring to talk to more than one visitor at a time. However, she still completed a great amount of work from her bed – including helping with the reform of public health.

I wasn't going to include the regular features this week but feel I should mention Adrienne Dellwo as she has been in hospital yet still managed to write her blog.  You may like to wish her well.  Also she includes a section about FM Awareness Day which in itself makes it eligible.

From Adrienne Dellwo, your Guide to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Adrienne Dellwo
Sorry to be short & sweet this week, but you'll understand why when you read the first item below, which is about why I'm sitting in a hospital bed right now.
Explore, enjoy, and take care of yourself!

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
